Bounded Optimality in a Cognitive Utility Learning Paradigm

چکیده
In this paper we report two experiments that test a theory of adaptation to memory limits. A critical aspect of the theory is the assumption that people make bounded optimal decisions, where optimality is defined relative to a payoff function and relative to embodied cognitive constraints. The experiments use a no-choice/choice utility learning paradigm where the no-choice phase is used to elicit a profile of each participant's performance across the strategy space and the choice phase is used to test predicted choices within this space. The experiments provide evidence to support the hypothesis that, with practice, participants select strategies that are bounded optimal given limits on speed and accuracy. The experiments also provide evidence against the hypothesis that people routinely offload information processing to the task environment. The implications of the findings for bounded optimal theories are discussed. Utility learning in cognitively bounded tasks 2 Abstract In this paper we report two experiments that test a theory of adaptation to memory limits. A critical aspect of the theory is the assumption that people make bounded optimal decisions, where optimality is defined relative to a payoff function and relative to embodied cognitive constraints. The implications of the findings for bounded optimal theories are discussed. Utility learning in cognitively bounded tasks 3 Arguably the function of the mind is to make control decisions in pursuit of reward. Presented with an extraordinary range of choice, decisions are taken that reduce the myriad possibilities to a single purposeful stream of behavior. But the mechanisms that support control are resource limited: decisions must be made that are …

Predicting Short-Term Remembering as Boundedly Optimal Strategy Choice
It is known that, on average, people adapt their choice of memory strategy to the subjective utility of interaction. What is not known is whether an individual's choices are boundedly optimal. Two experiments are reported that test the hypothesis that an individual's decisions about the distribution of remembering between internal and external resources are boundedly optimal where optimality is...
متن کاملOn Scheduling Exception Handlers in Dynamic Real-Time Systems
We consider the problem of scheduling exception handlers in real-time systems that operate under runtime uncertainties including those on execution times, activity arrivals, and failure occurrences. The application/scheduling model includes activities and their exception handlers that are subject to time/utility function (TUF) time constraints and an utility accrual (UA) optimality criterion. A...
متن کاملComputational rationality: linking mechanism and behavior through bounded utility maximization.
We propose a framework for including information-processing bounds in rational analyses. It is an application of bounded optimality (Russell & Subramanian, 1995) to the challenges of developing theories of mechanism and behavior. The framework is based on the idea that behaviors are generated by cognitive mechanisms that are adapted to the structure of not only the environment but also the mind...
متن کاملRisk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility
Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...
متن کاملInformation-Theoretic Bounded Rationality and ε-Optimality
Bounded rationality concerns the study of decision makers with limited information processing resources. Previously, the free energy difference functional has been suggested to model bounded rational decision making, as it provides a natural trade-off between an energy or utility function that is to be optimized and information processing costs that are measured by entropic search costs. The ma...
